“”I am refractive and my art is the refraction of my life.”
These are the words that Murat Sayginer uses to describe himself. It’s an apt description for the digital artist, filmmaker and composer who’s work clearly represents a distorted view of social norms, religion, and modern society. Born in Prague, he studied in Paris where as we all know, art pretty much ventures into the unknown. Is that a naked woman covered in bloody leaves? Or is it a critique on the hard-line anti-immigration stance against African refugees? All of this is to say that there are few words that can accurately describe Murat’s work but I’ll do the best I can.
His most recent film – Zodiac – Evolution is full of iconic imagrey – everything from the allegorical snake wrapping itself around the cross to angelic figures guarding the pearly gates. He draws a clear line between human and angels using the skin tone to differentiate the two. While I’m hesitant to simply state “this is clearly a visual representation of Genesis”, I’m going to go ahead and say the visuals are learning heavily in that direction.
Towards the beginning of the animation, there is a brief scene where two figures are painting each other at the same time by reaching through a non-existent canvas; I would posit that this is God creating man in his own image.
What I find especially intriguing leads me back to his artist statement, that his work is a refraction of his life. Refraction is when light strikes the surface of an object (like water) which results in the bending/distortion of light which is why you can’t see straight down through turbulent waters. Murat is clearly familiar with Genesis of the bible and his work expresses his personal take on the holy story. Religion touches everyone in different ways and it’s important that what one verse means to one person, is different than what it will mean to another.
Religion is Refraction. Now that’s something to think about.
