Blue – An Animation by Aymeric Seydoux

Do you have something worth dying for? Would you let go of your safety rope and cast yourself off into the unknown just to attain your innermost desires? Blue, an animation by French creative Aymeric Seydoux is a short, surreal story that tells the tale of a relationship between a lonely space travel and his blue ball. The ball is represents both love an sanity; we can see this as the main character plays catch by himself and process to freak out when the ball bounces away from him. The minimal use of colors and solid shapes helps frame the character’s mental fragility. Upon finding his true love ball, he finds himself beneath a giant window and he can gaze at a giant blue planet. No longer does the ball suffice as a tool for his desire, he must have something bigger, something better. Even if it costs his own life. There’s a lot of competing themes in this animation. Is it about desire? Humanity’s rapid rate of consumption? Or is the artist making a commentary on how quickly we lose our grip of sanity when we chase after dreams. Well, that’s up for you to decide.
