Top 10 games for the remainder 2008

There are so many games coming out in 2008 that I want that I am not sure I’ll have enough money. This year is shaping up to be one of the best years for video gaming in long time. I was asked to create a list of what I felt were the best games coming out for the remainder of 2008.

Anytime a top ten list is made it is someone’s opinion. This is no different. I try to have a somewhat informed opinion and mitigate any bias. The following games are what I feel are the best games coming out in the coming months. In the event it is too close to call between to close games I will give the high ranking to the multiplatform game. Should it be between two exclusives on different systems I will give it to the system with the higher install base. In any other event I will make a judgment call.

All of the following games are slated for a 2008 release. Not including any unforeseeable delays that may occur.

10 – Dead Space PC, 360, PS3

The new age of survival horror has arrived with this new title from EA. Instead of the normal weapons all you are armed to defend yourself with is mining equipment. The atmosphere is reminiscent of Alien as you are trapped on a falling apart spaceship with the crewmembers being turned into ghoulish monsters that must be dismembered before they can be killed. Several design choices give a very smooth, yet terrifying game play experience.

9 – Far Cry 2 PC, 360, PS3

Sequel to the gorgeous Far Cry, the game shifts the setting from a tropical island to the savannahs’ of Africa. The incredibly detailed plains are ravaged by gunfire as you try to get through it all in one piece. The main addition to the normal game play is the addition of new tactics by using the environment to your advantage. Have only one bullet left? Start a brush fire and watch the enemy burn.

8 – Mirror’s Edge PC, 360, PS3

A new IP that takes first person action in an entirely new direction, Mirror’s Edge is a vertigo inducing platformer that takes free running to an entirely new level. You are Faith, a runner, a sort of package deliverer that is outside of the information controlling government. No longer are you a camera with hands, but you can feel the weight of a body behind the moves.

7 – Resistance 2 PS3

Resistance 2 is the exclusive sequel to the hit first game for the Playstation 3. Now set in America, the chimera are in the middle of a full-scale invasion and Nathan Hale is the country’s only hope. Building upon the great action of the first game, its sequel brings it to a whole new level. For example, the fight with the 300-foot behemoth you see in the picture above.

6 – Gears of War 360

Another sequel, this time to the hit game Gears of War for the Xbox 360. More moves and new enemies as you continue in the war against the Locust, such as chainsaw battles.

5 – Rock Band 2 PC, 360, PS3, Wii

The original Rock Band was one of the best games released last year and now with the biggest set list in a music game yet, Rock Band 2 seems to be one of the best this year. AC/DC, Bon Jovi, Journey, Metallica, Guns n Roses and so much more. New modes of game play such as online world tour and battle of the bands fills out the experience of the highly anticipated sequel.

4 – Spore PC

The new Will Wright game that we have been seeing for years is finally arriving, unless delayed, again. Instead of building a civilization with predetermined units, you start at the cellular level. You can create your own species as it evolves to eventually fly into space and visit other worlds filled with species created by other users, an even try to conquer them. A truly ambitious project that steps up the experience of god games up to a whole new level.

3 – Little Big Planet PS3

An exclusive for the Playstation 3, Little Big Planet is the game that defines user created content. With an easy to use and almost infinitely expansive toolset you can create and share level you made with anyone else that has a copy of the game. Not just levels, but anything you can build as well. With infinite possibilities and an enormously fun multiplayer experience this is a game for both the hardcore and casual gamer.

2 – Prince of Persia PC, 360, PS3

This is a reboot to the popular franchise. No longer will there be the sands of time that cause all kinds of temporal havoc, but fear not all the other important point will be there. Astounding platforming, acrobatic combat and a world in danger. A wonderful new artistic direction and a true open world environment where depending where you go first could change the whole story make this game the next best single player action game.

1 – Fallout 3 PC, 360, PS3

The long awaited sequel in the Fallout series and the next great RPG from Bethesda Studios. Fallout 3 takes place in the nuclear aftermath of Washington DC. The game looks great and it really feels that if a nuclear war happened and it was a few hundred years later, this is what it would look like. The combat is especially innovative mixing action shooter combat with RPG action. A breath of fresh air in the midst of the dust swirling, radiation filled air of the game.

Feel free to disagree and voice your own thoughts. Anyway you look at it; these are the games to watch out for.
