Point and Click adventure games are not where I got my start in video-gaming. I started as a console game with the Atari and continued that trend till I was a teenager when my parents gifted me with a Sony Vaio desktop. Since I wasn’t rich, I pretty much bought every $5 game ever from target (Shogo anyone?) and many of those games were traditional adventure games with predictable plots and happy endings.
I miss those days.
Today most games I play are epic stories with marinara trench sized plot holes that I’m supposed to forgive because of the life-like qualities of the graphics. Hero of the Kingdom is a refreshing return to classic fantasy that successfully combines point-and-click, RPG, and RTS game mechanics. While the repetitive nature of the game would be a turn off for most people, I personally thought that it played into the whimsical nature of the game. You begin as a hero whose farm is attacked by bandits and you set out on a journey to tell your dad about what happened. On your way to do this you help (or don’t) villagers with their day to day problems. I killed a wild boar and helped an old woman pick flowers – each of these tasks adding to my renown and putting some gold in my pocket.
My Impression of Hero of the Kingdom
Hero of the Kingdom is simple, easy to get into, and easy to put down. It doesn’t ask a lot of mental investment and the large amount of quests (that are easy to fulfill) always have you feeling like you accomplished something when you hit the save and exit button. All in all, I had a lot of fun with this game and I’m happy I finally took the time to sit down and play through it. If you have spent a long time away from these types of games, Hero of the Kingdom is a great way to hop back in and will help you transition to the plethora of other, more involved, adventure games that you can find on Steam.
