The Illustrations of Masha Shishova

“That’s just so Russian” is not something I find myself using casually in conversation (for obvious reasons). Yet, when I came across the artwork of Masha Shishova, that’s the first thing that came to mind. I have no doubt that a person with any knowledge of Russia would mistake Masha’s work for anything but Russian. In each of her illustrations, the Moscow based artist manages to mix Russian pop culture, history, and her own personal flair to create excellent scenes that drag the viewer in. Her work uses the power dynamic between men and women, as well as the tension between upper and lower classes to create rich and interesting works of art.
